I received a call from Earl Walton
today (12/09/2011) to inform me that the youngest brother of James Smith
(64) Ray Smith died last night of a sudden heart attack. Earl said that Ray
was about 58 making him a WHS (70) grad and that is a guess on my part. Not
sure where Ray lives but James is on his way to Jackson, Ms to be with his
mother.
I had the honor on Sunday
of going to see "Sonny Burgess and The Pacers" at a small show in Shirley, Ark.
He is one of the last of the original rockabillies that started out in 1955-56
at Sun Records in Memphis. One of the guys in his band has been with him since
1956 and the rest just about as long. They had a local hit in the mid south
called "Red Headed Woman" in 1956 and a few other minor ones. Sonny is 75 years
old and still plays a mean lead on his Stratocaster and also has a pretty decent
voice for the years he has seen. There are very few of the early legends left
and I was thrilled and honored to see them, shake hands with them and get their
autographs. Long live true rock & roll !!

In Arkansas small cigars were hand rolled from home grown tobacco. Their
loose, spiral look resembled a "cat turd"
to the folks in Arkansas. Thus the name I pick up from my grandfather and
other relatives who smoked those things and drank home made whiskey and
blackberry wine. By the way. as I recall, Dewey James Smith attempted to
produce wine in his old Whitehaven home
and the "mixture" exploded somewhere in the upstairs part of his house on
Palmer Road. Can't remember the parents response.
Alan MarletteLooks to me like he is puffing on a
cat turd known as a cigar at a place he use to have in Mexico and picking a
very nice Gibson I might add.

Thanks for the explanation, Alan. Now that James lives up
there in Dogpatch and is becoming a macho mountain man, I figured it
was the real deal. I heard he had purchased several cats.
And we also heard he's keeping up the home-made tradition.
He's got his own little still and keeps an sharp eye out for
revenooers.

Been retired three years and finally caught a few decent
largemouth bass !! Anybody want to come see us and go fishing
?? Smith
Nice fish, Smith.
Don't think you qualify as a Pro Guide yet, however.
The Mayor says you haven't mastered the use high-dollar
rods and reels yet. But you are pretty good, he claims,
at harvesting trotlines that belong to some of the
green-teeth, glazed-eyed folks who live up there. So we
understand how you came by fish one and fish two. Be
careful.
I asked this question before and got no answer.
What's the anchor for?
